COSMOS is a flexible Big Data platform developed and operated by ALTYS that aggregates and analyzes data from multiple aeronautical sources. It helps to increase safety, situational awareness, and efficiency through better use of data within users’ operational environment as well as from independent sources.
How does it work?

COSMOS stores and integrates massive amounts of data, processes it through a powerful data fusion system, and presents it as automated web-based services. Data can be collected from our customers’ operational environment, from third parties such as air traffic control, airports, or airlines, or from ALTYS’s network of cloud-connected MICRA sensors.

The COSMOS system incorporates typed data collection techniques, flexible data structures, dynamic information extraction/storage, and multi-step processing. It is based on a distributed cluster architecture using a NoSQL database that can comprise several servers and may be deployed at the user’s site or at ALTYS, with unlimited simultaneous remote connections possible.

Users access the valuable information presented by COSMOS via a secure web application. The COSMOS application gives users 24/7 access to automatically generated reports, statistics, event trackers and alarms, maps, data export, and much more.

Case Studies


In 2006 EUROCONTROL selected ALTYS to develop the “MOON” platform for the monitoring of VDL Mode 2 and ATN-CPDLC traffic. MOON is a fully independent network of VDL Mode 2 Remote Monitoring Units (RMUs) located throughout Europe in to provide coverage of the entire European airspace.

The MOON platform was designed to examine the growing usage of the aeronautical datalink infrastructure, with a particular focus on CPDLC performances, as a crucial part of the former EUROCONTROL Link2000+ Program.

It has been instrumental in the detection of CPDLC and VDL Mode 2 implementation issues affecting interoperability or channel occupancy. MOON has also provided key information for further capacity planning and multi-frequency VDL2 deployment.

SITAONAIR selected ALTYS Technologies’ COSMOS system for the advanced monitoring of all VDL Mode 2 and ATN communications exchanged via its global network. COSMOS will give SITAONAIR enhanced insight into the performance levels of its infrastructure worldwide, as well as the use of VDL2 frequencies across various geographical service areas. It will also provide in-depth tracking capabilities for controller-pilot data link communications (CPDLC) issues such as provider aborts and abnormal delays.

Through COSMOS, SITAONAIR is able to share key data with its air navigation service provider (ANSP) partners – allowing them to comply with CPDLC performance monitoring obligations as stipulated in the European DLS Implementing Rule.

In 2012, AENA (now known as ENAIRE) – the Spanish air navigation service provider (ANSP) – selected SITA for a major upgrade of its air-ground datalink communications radio network. This included a large-scale COSMOS solution from ALTYS for the automated monitoring, issue detection, and performance assessment of Spain’s datalink infrastructure through a set of independent VHF datalink (VDL) receivers and interconnection with SITA to collect VHF ground station (VGS) traffic.
